My husband's first run in with the law 15 years ago plunged our family into a perpetual state of crisis, and it gets worse with each subsequent prison term.
We’ve lost our savings, jobs, home and almost our children. We see no light at the end of the tunnel still.
Our children are not spared from this callous attitude. Parents of friends who knew of their father's incarceration would not let them associate. No more going to each other's houses.

Barring threats of harm, where non-compliance could result in serious injury, the extent to which a person can be influenced to commit a crime by their peers, depends on how much they can relate to those influencing them. That is, how much they have in common.
The approximately 10,000 prison admissions each year affect a similar number of families; parents, partners, siblings and children who would face complex challenges as a result of the incarceration of their kin. Forced separation and broken attachments, burden of increased roles and responsibilities, disruption in education and employment, financial difficulties, reduced opportunities, bullying and abuse, restricted welfare support, not to mention the emotional, psychological and physiological toil. Under the weight of these, marriages can break down and parent-child relationship

Like most others, I used to blame my husband for our predicament, for if he did not offend, we wouldn't be in such a state, right?
Well, I've come to realise that's not the case. I mean, how does the logical reasoning for this even go, if you even attempt to contemplate this earnestly.
There are many contributing factors in a chain of cause and effect to reach the state we're at. Many of them are outside the control of the offender and there are more parties involved than the offender alone.
It's really not what you think and I'm here to set the record straight.
that this 'blame the offender' syndrome does more harm than good, as it contributes to offending. Of course most people will find this assertion of mine ludicrous but I'll set the record straight.

Is Singapore Prison Service's methods throughcare approach in rehabilitating inmates effective?, and works with Yellow Ribbon Singapore (YRSG), community partners and volunteers. Is it working?
Is it because ex-offenders are unrepentant, recalcitrant, social misfits, being negatively influenced by peers or have too much free time on their hands?
These are what you've been made to believe all these while. While they may ring true for some people, but they do not represent every offender and does not reveal the root of the problem.
I foresee it won't be his last.
