Services and history

I know where substance abuse stems from. Drug offenders are getting younger. Almost 70% of prison inmates are drug offenders. Upon release, about 40% of them reoffend within 5 years, consistently every year. Surely, this cannot be indicative of the effectiveness of measures taken towards addressing drug use. There are more facets to drug use and offending than most people will ever realise.

Criminal offenders are arguably the most marginalised group. Most people are not interested in their wellbeing, even considering them undeserving of it. Stray animals receive more care and concern.

With the extreme power differential between them and the purveyors of justice, offenders lack bargaining power for their self-interest. Particularly incarcerated individuals who are completely at the mercy of their captors. The slightest misstep could result in severe punishment.

To date, no programs and policies adequately address the needs of this group. Those that serve the needs of the population as a whole tend to discriminate them, placing restrictions on them in access services and aid, resulting in challenges getting even their most basic needs met.

To call it a criminal justice system is a misnomer. I know very well about the various ways that miscarriages of justice can occur, where innocent people are sent to prison, such as the case of my husband’s first conviction. This event was the downfall that led to his prison revolving doors to this date. The reality is not what people think.

A pillar of strength provides calm in the midst of the storm of sudden, shocking changes, When a person can confidently guide the family through sudden, shocking changes, positive transformation. It minimises serious repercussions such as future offending for children due to adverse childhood experiences.

I have insights into early age offending. The majority of youth offenders today are from families with no criminality backgrounds nor of exceptional circumstances. They come from normal functioning homes, the category most families fall into. Juvenile delinquency is now a potential risk for every child.

With fertility rate at an all time low, the pool of future leaders are shrinking and the impact that each youth has upon society is greater than before. With rising youth mental health challenges, suicides and substance use, we need to dig deeper to the root of behaviours and not blame failings on social media or games promoting violence.

Naturally these impact their immediate family who have overlapping needs.

Furthermore, the ostracism extends to the immediate family, from social as well as familial circles. Not only does this deprive them of the moral support, in some cases they add onto the troubles the family is already experiencing and they can also bring about additional troubles.
